Ever since The Public Domain Review began back in 2011, readers have implored us to do a large format book of beautiful images – well, finally, here it is… We are extremely excited to announce the launch of Affinities — a very special book of images to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the project!
Gathering over 500 prints, paintings, illustrations, sketches, photographs, doodles, and everything in between, the book is a carefully curated journey exploring echoes and connections across more than two millennia of visual culture. The seasoned PDR reader will meet many favourites across the pages, but also a vast array of as-of-yet unshared delights dusted off especially for this volume. Assembled according to a dreamlike logic, the images unfurl in a single unbroken sequence, through a play of visual echoes and evolving thematic threads.
As for the physical book itself, we wanted to create an object as stunning as the images within. It is large format (28 x 21.5cm / 11 x 8.5”), boasts a cloth-bound hardcover, with a foil stamped title and embossed inset image, and extends across a whopping 368 pages. To help get this beauty made and assure the highest quality production, we are delighted to have teamed up with specialist art book publisher Volume, an imprint of Thames & Hudson.
The PDR project is made a reality by the support of our community, and so too will this book. Volume works off a crowdfunder model — if you want the book you pledge for a copy on Volume's crowdfunder, and if we make the funding target within the allotted time then we can afford to go ahead and produce the book. Delivery will be early next year. (And, of course, if we don’t make the target, you'll be fully refunded.)
We really hope you’re as excited as we are about this book and pledge to buy a copy today, to help us reach the funding target so we can get this out into the world!
In addition to the standard edition of the book, we’ve worked with Volume to create a special Collector’s Edition (in a slipcase with limited edition poster) and also a set of limited edition prints. All of the offerings are only available during the campaign. To make this work it's going to be vital we have people spreading the word about the crowdfunder, so please do share far and wide with all you think might enjoy the book! While in many ways we’ve made this for the PDR community, we also really hope the book will have a wider appeal and bring lots of new people to the project.
