Overture: An Excerpt from Swann’s Way
The perfect pocket Proust — the spellbinding opening section of Swann’s Way. Complete in itself, yet containing in miniature every obsession that will unfold across the seven-volume epic to come: childhood, memory, desire, sensation — including the most famous conjunction of cake and tea in twentieth-century fiction.

Choice selections from J. R. Ware’s irresistible Passing English of the Victorian Era (1909), distilled here for pure delight — including such gems as “Got the Morbs” (temporary melancholia), “Doing the Bear” (courting that involves hugging), and “Nanty Narking” (great fun). The Victorian world in its own unruly voice.

Hell is a hotel room in Paris, where a woman’s one sin is repeated eternally; heaven sees Kant lead a man into “cubic time” and the beating heart of God. Together these tales, from Sinclair’s Uncanny Stories (1923), trace a divine comedy in miniature: two indelible visions of the afterlife from an unjustly forgotten voice of modernism.

About the Minis series
PDR Press Minis are pocket-sized editions of public domain texts: carefully curated, beautifully produced, and deliberately eclectic. Complete works and excerpts — stories, ideas, poems, miscellanies — from ancient curiosities through Victorian oddities to modernist rarities, each with an introductory note from our editors. We publish six titles a year, in two batches of three. Some may be works you know, seen from a fresh angle. Others may be writers and texts you have never encountered. All will be books worth having.
About PDR Press
PDR Press is the publishing imprint of The Public Domain Review. We bring the same care and attention that drives the journal to every book we publish — giving new form to out-of-copyright texts and images through imaginative curation, editing, and design. Between 2014 and 2020, we published an annual essay collection and a handful of other titles. The Minis series marks a new chapter for the Press, with much more to come.
