The plate demon is supposed to be the ghost of Okiku who worked as a maid of a warrior's house. After she accidentally broke a treasured plate her angry lord killed her and threw her body in a well in his yard, which she then proceeded to haunt. From the series Hyaku monogatari (100 Ghost Tales). (Image Source: Library of Congress)
