Color lithograph made from a Beardsley drawing depicting Isolde drinking the love potion which, according to the tales of King Arthur, would bind her to the knight Tristan, though with ultimately tragic results. Although Beardsley would illustrate the King Arthur legend, the reference for this partiuclar depiction is likely to be Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde, which was performed frequently in the 1890s. Beardsley claimed that he “would do anything and go anywhere . . . to hear Wagner’s music.” (Source: Cleveland Museum of Art)
